How to Choose Between Boppy and My Brest Friend

How to Choose Between Boppy and My Brest Friend - Or Battle of the Breastfeeding Pillows

Which breastfeeding pillow to use is a hotly debated topic. Is the Boppy better? Or the My Brest Friend? Will a rolled-up old towel from the trunk of the car do in a pinch? (OK, maybe they're not debating the last point, but show me a breastfeeding mother who hasn't asked themselves this question.) I will help you decide. And I will also let you in on a little-known secret: you don't really need one. Proof? Have you ever seen a breastfeeding pillow in National Geographic?

But most new moms in America are going to buy one, or receive one as a gift, so you need to know the pros and cons of each.

The My Brest Friend (MBF) nursing pillow fits a wide range of bodies. It has a strap that goes around your back to hold the pillow in place and it's adjustable. So the pillow will still fit after your post-birth, geez-I-still-look-pregnant belly disappears. The MBF also has a firm, flat surface which helps with positioning the baby. And it has a pocket - great for stashing snacks, nipple cream, breast pads, a small bottle of water, and, oh, did I mention the breastfeeding mother's real best friend: snacks? (As you, too, will soon discover, having snacks nearby that can be eaten one-handed is extremely important.)

The number one biggest con of the MBF is the name. Come on. Don't you feel ridiculous saying it? Some knucklehead probably suggested it as a joke and some bigger knucklehead actually liked it. Other than that, MBF is cumbersome and way too big to slip discreetly into your pretty new diaper bag. And some mothers (namely me) found it to be too high. The space between lap and boobs just wasn't big enough for the MBF and the baby.

Boppy is the hands-down winner - if color coordination is your top priority. It comes with a removable slipcover, you can buy additional official-Boppy slipcovers, and I've even seen custom Boppy slipcovers offered on sites like eBay and etsy. The slipcover-angle isn't all color-coordination though: removable = easy to clean. And as soon as baby arrives, easy to clean will knock color-coordinated so far off the top of your priorities list it may take years to regain its former standing. What's more, Boppy multi-tasks. It's great for propping up and tummy time.

Though less cumbersome relative to MBR, the Boppy isn't slipping into your pretty new diaper bag either. And it's too small for many bodies. I wear a size 6 pants (OK, occasionally I wear a 6. More often I wear an 8) and when I put on the Boppy it bends at the center, and when it bends, it makes an awkward surface for baby. The bending (on anyone bigger than Nicole Richie) plus the Boppy's rounded surface, can sometimes roll baby too much toward mom to get a good latch.

After all that, here is my recommendation. If you are trying to keep it simple and not buy into the consumerism-crazy baby industry, don't get a breastfeeding pillow. Use a bed pillow. Use a rolled up blanket. Use your buff, prenatal yoga arms. If you can't help yourself and you're dying to have all the cool baby stuff there is to have, get both. Use MBF for breastfeeding and use Boppy for propping up and tummy time. How's that for a decisive answer?

Either way, breastfeeding is one of the best things you can do for your baby - and it's one of the best things you can do for yourself. Breastfeeding gives you a reason (not that you needed it) to cuddle and gaze endlessly at the miracle that is your beautiful new baby. Breastfeeding releases hormones that give you a warm, happy feeling. And breastfeeding is darn convenient. Wherever you and your baby go - diaper bag or not - you have all the baby food you need.

10 Unusual Baby Gifts for Newborn Babies

Gifts for newborn babies are treasured by new parents around the world. Most often, gifts for newborns are given at a baby shower and then again at the baby’s Christening or other religious rite.

Most gifts include items such as baby clothes, baby furniture, and money for an education fund.

Here are some more baby gifts that are unusual and interesting:

1) Shoulder Sling. This handy shoulder sling made of strong cotton cloth holds the baby securely against a person’s chest. The sling is comfortable for both the baby and the sling wearer.

2) Wristwatch Baby Monitor. This wristwatch is a receiver that receives the slightest baby sound from a transmitter situated near the baby. This monitor runs on a battery that recharges while it continues to monitor. The wristwatch monitor can be worn on the wrist or belt while you work around the house.

3) Neoprene Baby Bib. The beauty of this bib is that it can be wiped clean after each use. There is even a pocket along the bottom of the bib to catch food.

4) The “Boppy” Baby Pillow. This is an all-around form-fitting pillow which the baby lies on while sleeping, feeding, or resting in your arms. It fits any size infant.

5) Musical Mobile. Having a mobile over the crib provides interest for the baby and helps him or her focus on objects. Mobiles can be made up of butterflies, fish, birds, or characters from fairy tales. Some give off a tinkling sound in the breeze while others have music that can be turned on or off.

6) Car Seat. A baby’s car seat with a harness and safeguard is a highly desired gift for a newborn baby. Most babies spend a lot of time in the back seat of a car and need to be kept safe while they ride.

7) Changing Table. Every new baby needs a changing table. The changing table is structured so that the baby cannot roll off. The changing table is light-weight enough to be moved from place to place. The shelves on the bottom are for storage.

8) Storage Tote. A storage tote is a roomy canvas bag for the nursery. It is meant to hold books, CDs, baby powder, diapers, toys, or baby bottles. Storage totes are an alternative to storage boxes. They have the advantage of being light-weight and easy to move around.

9) Baby cup. A silver or silver-plated baby cup engraved with the baby’s initials is a desirable gift. People keep their baby cup for their entire life.

10) Baby Name Scroll. This is a name painting showing the baby’s first name, its meaning, history, and famous people with the same name. The background is a painting, with a golden crown, crests, and seals. It is a collectible and is ready for framing.

The above baby gifts are enough to brighten any new parent’s day. Most are on the unusual side and will make a hit at a party. With all the gifts to choose from, you will surely enjoy the experience of finding the perfect gifts for newborn babies in your life.

Boppy Nursing Pillow

Of all the clothes, gadgets, lotions and potions I received at my baby shower, one present stands out: my Boppy nursing pillow. It is something I wouldn't have purchased myself. I thought it another unnecessary piece of baby gear destined to clutter up the house. Instead, I've used my nursing pillow every day for nearly ten months. It is by far the most useful baby accessory I own.

DESCRIPTION

The Boppy nursing pillow fits comfortably around the waist, providing a platform for baby to lie on. Baby's weight is supported at nursing level for nearly hands-free breastfeeding while still maintaining close body contact.

ADVANTAGES

Versatility: As a nursing pillow, the Boppy can be used during any sitting activity including dining, reading and computer work. The U-shaped pillow also serves as an excellent support for babies learning to sit up on their own. The Boppy has endless uses as a floor play object and also comes in handy as a safety barrier and door stop.

Availability: The Boppy is widely available at major retail outlets. Check the Boppy website for your nearest retailer.

Publishers Note: Our Boppy, originally for nursing, has also been used as a toddler seat at the table and floor; foot rest; back and bottom cushion for weary parents; doll accessory; couch and TV pillow; bed pillow; puppy rest and cat bed. It's very sturdy and has lived through two years of punishment from a family of five with only fading to show for it. -- Gina Ritter

DISADVANTAGES

Cleaning: The care instructions on the label recommend machine washing on cold using the delicate cycle with no bleach. Though drying instructions are not listed on the label, the website states that it may be dried in a dryer. Due to the large size and awkward shape of the Boppy, it may not fit in all machines. Furthermore, washing in cold water may not eliminate any bacteria present. Washable Boppy slip covers are available from some retailers at an additional cost.

One Size: Though the Boppy is designed to fit a wide range of body shapes, one size does not fit all. Extremely petite or full-figured women may not find the Boppy comfortable.

Fill: The Boppy is hypoallergenic, but chemically sensitive families should be aware that the Boppy is stuffed with polyester fiberfill.

Political: Covers are sewn in Mexico.

Baby Supplies - What Does Your Infant Really Need?

New parents are excited about registering for baby supplies until they see the list of items they are going to need. Often stores will list more items than are really necessary because they know you do not want to deprive your baby of anything essential and are clueless as to what you really will use. Probably half of the list could be eliminated and shockingly your baby would still survive. But how do you know what your baby really needs? Talking with other parents who have done this before you can be helpful to get their suggestions about what supplies really are essential in caring for an infant. But ultimately you know what will work best in your home.

Some items obviously are nonessential, but can be very useful depending on your specific situation. A bottle warmer may not be necessary, but can be quite beneficial if you will primarily be feeding your baby breast milk or formula in a bottle. It is not recommended to heat bottles of milk in the microwave because it can eliminate some nutrients and can be too hot for your baby. Heating bottles in hot water is fine but can take several minutes, which can seem like an eternity with a screaming baby. Therefore, a bottle warmer may be an essential item for you. If you will be breastfeeding your baby most of the time, however, and not using bottles very often a bottle warmer will most likely be an unnecessary item you will have to store. A wet wipe warmer on the other hand may be a luxury for your baby's bottom, but is probably not something most parents would consider essential.

Every experienced parent will have their thoughts on what baby item they would not have survived without. And you quickly will become proficient in the world of baby terminology after completing your baby registry. Who knew what a bumbo, boppy or diaper genie was before becoming a parent? Now these are supplies you are sure you could not live without. But before you become confused with all these items, let us stick to the basics.

To get started with gathering essential baby supplies for your baby, we will begin with the layette (baby's bedding and clothing). At the bare minimum you will want your baby to have 6-8 onesies or T-shirts, 6-8 sleepers, 4-6 pairs of booties or socks, 4-6 receiving blankets, 3-4 sets of sheets, 4-6 burp cloths and 6-8 washcloths. Depending on how frequently you want to be doing laundry, you may want more of these items. Remember with clothing your baby will outgrow sizes quite quickly the first year. Also, you are likely to receive many adorable outfits from friends and family.

Other essential baby items are medical supplies and baby toiletries. Make sure to have available a rectal digital thermometer (not a mercury thermometer) and lubricant (petroleum jelly). A rectal digital thermometer gives the most accurate temperature reading for infants until they are 6 months old. After 6 months of age you can use other types of thermometers for accurate temperature readings. Also have in your medical supplies non-aspirin liquid pain reliever for infants (such as acetaminophen). Rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs are important for the first couple weeks to clean the umbilical cord stump. Other good items to have on hand are saline drops for a stuffy nose, diaper rash cream, and infant nail clippers. Bathing items your baby will need are baby shampoo or body wash, a baby tub or bath sponge, and towels and washcloths.

Obviously you will want to have purchased some diapers before you come home from the hospital. Depending on the size of your infant, you will use either newborn or size 1 diapers. Do not go overboard on purchasing one size of diapers or you may have remaining diapers after your baby outgrows them. Most newborns use approximately 80 diapers per week so purchase accordingly.

After these baby supplies, the bigger items are based on preference. You will have to decide what stroller system works best for you, whether you want a full-sized crib or bassinet, dresser or changing table, baby papasan, or wet wipe warmer. One item that is absolutely essential before you go to the hospital is an infant car seat. The hospital will not let you check out until they know you have a car seat safely installed inside your vehicle. This is one baby item you may want to do some extensive research on and make an informed decision before purchasing. But most items are whatever you determine to be essential baby supplies. Here is another article with more information about essential baby supplies and what you will need as a new parent.

Gifts for Expecting or New Parents

Becoming a parent is a big change in a persons life. A lot is taking place during the pregnancy and preparation of the new arrival. As friends and family members of those expecting, we can't forget to pamper the parents-to-be during all of this. Unexpected gifts or gestures are always a nice welcome to any mom or dad. As one of the contributors to our website, Kerry Hayward from Missouri, has put together a list of items that would be great gifts for expecting or new parents. This list also includes some gift ideas for the baby as well. Kerry is a mother herself, so she speaks with experience as she helps the rest of us find the perfect way to pamper expecting or new parents.

In this article:

- gift ideas for expecting or new parents
- gift ideas for baby
- a couple tips for new parents

gift ideas for expecting or new parents

*disposable camera

*roll of stamps (so you don't have to run out and get some with thank you notes to send--one less errand)

*pedicure before due date (you can do your own at home, but a friend once that with all that goes on during labor, etc. at least her toes would look great!) This can also pep you up that last week or so,

*rotation of dinner meals arranged by friends or neighbors, maybe for that first week postpartum after coming home from the hospital (good to check if the parents have any food allergies or restrictions ahead of time, and good to set a time to be dropping off the meals, or at least a ball park) - Get your friends together and plan a week or two or month worth of meals that you, friends and neighbors can do for the new parents.

*arge size exercise ball (very helpful for use before, during and after labor--also comfortable to use to sit on while working at the computer and for exercising)

*bottles of water for nursing moms to keep at each nursing station since it is so important to stay hydrated while nursing babies

*quick, healthy snacks/breakfast items (It becomes to easy to eat junk food, since it's quick and easy to use only one hand to eat it with - but it's not good nutrition for you OR your baby.)

*restaurant gift certificates (for places that have carry-out or delivery option as well, since sometimes that is easier)--this gift is very nice again later when the baby gets past four months and it becomes a little more challenging to go out to eat

*movie rental gift certificates (Blockbuster, etc.)

*books on tape (easy to listen to while feeding the baby, rocking, etc.)

*cozy slipper socks/slippers

*save newspaper headlines and local news clippings from the day the baby was born and make a collage and frame them for the parents and baby - this way they can see what was going on in the world when they were born

Below are just a few gift ideas for the baby that Kerry found useful being a new mom.

gift ideas for baby:

*diapers and wipes (they add up and go so fast! But probably not newborn size since the parents probably will already have a couple of packages of these and they aren't in this size for very long)

*easy-on footie pajamas (i.e., zipper, snap or button up style, NOT over the head)

* sleep-sack

* waterproof crib/bassinet/lap pads

*Boppy pillow or Boppy 5 in 1 activity center

*sling or soft carrier (highly recommended--these are awesome!!!!)

*possibly a digital camera (we don't have one of these, but I think it would be great especially for those who have family and friends spread out)

And here's just a tip for new parents:

*create multiple diaper changing stations if you have more than one level in your house (we found this to come in very handy!!)

* An idea from something I attended recently:

For those who are having their 2nd or 3rd child, instead of having a baby shower, the host had something called a "Sip and See" where she served brunch and coffee, etc. and friends could come and meet their babies. Also instead of bringing gifts, they asked the guests to instead bring change to put in a piggy bank (which the hostess had bought as her gift) to start there college funds or savings account.)

An Infant Pillow Makes Breastfeeding Convenient

An infant pillow is created with the idea to make breastfeeding fun and comfortable, and to make it a convenient time for both mother and baby. It's well known to be quite complicated for the new moms to sit up and breastfeed the baby, as her body feels sore and tired. Most moms have many troubles while breastfeeding their babies. The major one might be their aching back, which prevents them from enjoying the precious moments of tenderness, while bonding with their newborn baby. This is when a gift such as a nursing boppy is appreciated.

These nursing pillows are usually designed in a "U" shape. These infant pillows fit snugly around the mother's waist. During nursing, the baby is placed on the nursing pillow, which greatly reduces the strain on the mother's aching back, shoulders and arms. Breastfeeding pillows offer such an essential relief for all moms, young and mature.

This considerable relief is taken from back pain and other such pregnancy symptoms that trouble a woman for long. However, the rounded U-shaped nursing pillow may be absolutely uncomfortable if you insist on feeding your baby by sitting in a rocker.

As soon as an infant pillow is designed to make breastfeeding a great fun and an enjoyable time for both mother and baby, a nursing boppy is meant to be used by the mother, who prefers sitting on a bed or a couch. Moreover, those wishing to bottle-feed the baby, can use the benefits of nursing pillows too! So it might be the best time for you to experience the comfortable feeding with specially designed infant pillows.

How to Make a Boppy Pillow Cover

Parents have named the Boppy pillow the number-one baby product and with good reason. The Boppy pillow has a multitude of uses, from its most common function as a nursing pillow to pelvic support for sleeping moms. While you can buy replacement covers for Boppy pillows, crafty moms can save money and have fun by making them at home. Read on for simple instructions.

Things You’ll Need:

* Fabric
* Zipper
* Sewing machine
* Thread
* Tape measure
* Scissors
* Paper
* Boppy pillow

Step1 : Choose a washable fabric you like. You can make your Boppy pillow cover out of one fabric or two. You'll also need a zipper, hook-and-loop tape or snaps as well as basic sewing supplies like a sewing machine, thread, a tape measure and scissors.

Step2 : Download (see Resources) a pattern for a Boppy pillow cover, or make your own using your Boppy pillow. Lay your Boppy pillow on a sheet of paper and trace around it. Cut at least an inch beyond the line you drew to allow for a generous seam allowance.

Step3 : Pin your pattern to your fabric (you'll need about a yard of fabric) and cut out enough fabric for both sides of the Boppy pillow. Again, you can use the same fabric for both sides of the pillow or two coordinating fabrics.

Step4 : Place the two pieces of fabric right sides together and sew around most of the pillow. Leave the "U" part of the pillow open. This opening is where you will attach the zipper, hook-and-loop tape or snaps.

Step5 : Attach a zipper, hook-and-loop tape or snaps to the fabric along the "U" part of the Boppy pillow. Then carefully insert your Boppy pillow into its new cover.

Some Benefits of the Boppy Pillow

Most of us don't have room to buy every baby product available, so it's important to find products for your child that'll do double duty. One product that serves many different purposes is the Boppy Pillow. These pillows can even work for your child until he or she learns to walk. Boppy Pillows make great gifts for any woman who's expecting a baby, and can even help your infant develop the muscles to hold up the head. Boppy Pillows also help with sitting, and are useful from day one. Feeding and burping get a lot easier with a Boppy Pillow, too.

The most important purpose of a Boppy Pillow is helping with feeding. Babies that are bottle fed and babies that are breast fed can both use the Boppy Pillow. It helps both parents get comfortable with their baby, and places him or her in the right position for feeding. The curved design of the Boppy Pillow lets you slip it around your hips. Then, just rest your baby on top to feed comfortably. There's no reason to lean forward if breast feeding, reducing strain on mom's back. Feeding your baby with the help of a Boppy Pillow allows you to do so in a comfortable, relaxing atmosphere.

It's always a good idea to prop your baby up after feeding. This reduces acid reflux. A Boppy Pillow is perfect for this, since it's curved shape makes a good place for your baby to rest. Just put your baby inside the pillow, head resting up, and your child will easily and comfortably digest his or her meal. Since the whole pillow surrounds your baby, you don't have to worry about him or her falling or rolling off of the pillow.

Another important time for very young babies is tummy time. Your child should spend at least a half hour a day on his or her stomach. The Boppy Pillow is a great place for this, since it props your baby up and helps develop neck muscles, encouraging your child to hold his or her head up. Boppy Pillows can also help strengthen muscles in the neck and back, prevent a flat head, and improve your child's coordination.

After your baby is a few months old, you can use your Boppy Pillow to help a baby learn to sit. The Boppy Pillow surrounds your child, allowing you to be certain a wobbly baby won't fall over. This pillow is a safe, comfortable place for any child to learn to sit, and it helps develop and strengthen the muscles that are needed for sitting. It offers a little bit of support to help with development, but there's no dependence on the pillow - your baby learns to sit on his or her own.

Boppy Pillows come in lots of different colors, so expectant mothers can choose the one that fit their personal taste. They can also be slipcovered with many different designs and shades. A slipcover allows your Boppy Pillow to stay clean - just wash the slipcover if a mess happens. You can even keep a single Boppy Pillow within the family. Boppy Pillows

Finding baby products that serve more than one purpose is very important, especially since most parents don’t have the money or the room for every single baby product on the market. Luckily, Boppy Pillows make it possible for all parents to have a product that serves many different purposes, and can grow with the child until they are able to walk. A Boppy Pillow is a great gift for any expecting mother, and they actually help infants develop the muscles that help them hold their head up as well as sit on their own. A Bobby Pillow is a great product that can be used from the day a baby is born, and can help with a number of different tasks such as feeding and burping.

The main purpose of a Boppy Pillow is to help with feeding, and both breastfed and bottle fed babies can use a Boppy for feeding time. The Boppy Pillow makes it possible for both mom and dad to be comfortable with baby, and places baby in the best position for feeding. The pillows curved design allows it to be slipped right around the hips, and then baby can rest right on top of it for a comfortable feeding. The Boppy Pillow can also reduce stress on the mother’s back, since there is no need to lean forward during breast feedings. Parents who use Boppy Pillows are able to feed their baby in a relaxing, and comfortable atmosphere.

Propping baby up after feeding is always a good idea, especially since it reduces acid reflux. The Boppy Pillow works great for propping up baby, since the curved design provides a perfect home for baby. Just place baby inside the middle of the pillow with its head resting up on the pillow, and baby will be able to digest their meal comfortably. Since the entire pillow will surround baby, there is no need to worry about baby rolling off or falling over off the pillow.

Tummy time is also very important for young babies, and most Pediatricians recommend that infants spend at least 30 minutes a day on their stomachs. The Boppy Pillow is a great place to put baby on tummy time, since it helps to prop them up and develop their neck muscles to hold their heads up on their own. The Boppy Pillow can also help to improve coordination, strengthen both neck and back muscles, and even prevent flat head syndrome.

Once baby is a few months old, it is important that parents held their children learn to sit on their own. The Boppy Pillow can surround a child when they are learning to sit on their own, so wobbly babies will be left unharmed. The Boppy Pillow will provide a comfortable and safe atmosphere for any baby learning to sit on their own, and will also help to strengthen and develop muscles the child needs to sit up. It adds a little support for learning children, but still allows babies to sit on their own without dependence on the pillow.

One of the best aspects of the Boppy Pillow is the variety of colors that they come in, since expectant mothers all have different taste. There are a number of different slipcovers that can be purchased, ranging in both colors and designs. The slipcovers work great since the pillow stays clean, and the slipcover can be thrown right into the wash in case baby makes a mess. One Boppy Pillow can stay in the same family since the slipcovers can be changed as much as the family would like, and it can even be gifted again with a new slipcover once a family has no more use for it. Boppy Pillows are a great idea for any family expecting a baby, and they can personalize their Boppy by buying slipcovers on their own.
